October 2022

Our parish celebrated our Feast Day this year with a month-long Family Fiesta in August. Today, the fiesta air still lingers with memories that will forever be etched in the minds and hearts of parishioners. St Mary’s wanted to bring back the spirit of the family into the hearts of parishioners by lining up events based on the theme of “Let’s Pray, Let’s Play, Let’s Learn, and Let’s Celebrate!” Here’s a quick roundup of the events that were organised by ministries from the Youth & Young Adults Office (“Youth Office” in this article), aimed at drawing youths and young adults through activities and ministering.

Board Games & Captain’s Ball (Saturday 6 August)

We kicked off the Family Fiesta with Board Games organised by New Wineskins, our youth praise and worship team, in collaboration with Mind Cafe, to create a relaxed cafe-like environment in Gubbio for participants to come play and learn various board games. This event attracted both youths and families who were given the opportunity to bond and have fun while playing these games! The Youth Office also organised Captain’s Ball matches for those who preferred something more active.

Talk: Why Do I Need Jesus In My Life? (Friday 19 August)

Redemptorist Brother Celestine Toh, CSsR, was invited to share with our catechism students why Jesus should take priority in their lives. His accompanying team members also shared their personal stories on the importance of recognising and encountering Jesus in our friends and communities. The session ended with a beautiful group sharing under the night sky.

Water Soccer and Dunking Machine (Saturday 27 August)

The highlight of the Family Fiesta for the Youth Office was the Water Soccer and Dunking Machine held on 27 August organised by San Giorgio, Young People’s Community (YPC) and Knights of the Altar (KOTA), together with the Youth Office. It was a soaking wet day for everyone including our friars - Friars Mike, Esmond and Gerald who sportingly agreed to be “victims” for the dunking machine! The Youth Office would like to thank them for taking the time to join the youths and in bringing lots of excitement and laughter to this activity.

Kampung Night (Saturday 27 August)

We ended the Family Fiesta with a bang by bringing back Kampung Night. New Wineskins was one of the bands performing to a crowd of more than 300 people. They jammed to contemporary music such as “Secret Place” and played classics like “One Way Jesus”. The night was filled with good food, music and entertainment for our entire parish community.

Upcoming Friday’s Catch Talk - “Civilisation of Love” on Friday, 28 October

The Family Fiesta showed the desire for connection with one another through activities. Hence the Youth Office will be presenting Friday’s Catch, on 28 October from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm at St Clare Hall! We have invited Sister Theresa Seow who, with a bucket of experience in ecumenical work and serving the poor, will share with us how we can contribute to our common home and see the face of Christ in those we encounter every day. See you at this talk! You can book your seats here:
